Calling All Local Football Followers

jonathanhay

As the 2009 season hots up and local football clubs around Australia swing into full pre season action, I thought I would call on all Local Football Followers to give their thoughts on local leagues, has anyone “High Profile” been recruited to your club or your league? Who is coaching who? Teams to beat? any or all of the above.

Leave a Comment below and let everyone know what is going on at your club or in your league.

There a stacks of local leagues and teams out there and it is always interesting to hear where people have ended up.

For instance we will be lining up against ex Kangaroo and Hawk All Australian player Jonathon Hay, who has been recruited to play for Langwarrin Football Club, who have been promoted to Peninsula Division on the Mornington Peninsula Football League. Aaron Fiora is lining up with East Ringwood this year after being delisted by the Tigers.

Click on the “Share This” link below, then on the Send / Email Tab and email this around to anyone and everyone you know that has something to do with local football around the country, so they can let everyone know about what is happening.

Ben Cousins Return to AFL Football

Well on Thursday we are going to witness the biggest NAB Cup game in the history of AFL Football when Collingwood take on Ben Cousins, oops I mean Richmond. We could possibly see the biggest crowd ever to a pre season game and is probably bigger news than the Aussies that appeared at the Oscars yesterday.

I had to laugh at this though, when a Channel 9 sports reporter was walking next to Ben Cuusins when he was entering Punt Road Oval for training (sipping on a Latte of course), the best he could come up with was “Are you looking forward to having a kick on Thursday?”. Cousins response was outstanding, he just laughed and kept waliking. Love it……

The Nick Maxwell Appeal – He Gets Off……

5maxwell

Well the much anticipated appeal from Collingwood Football Club on “that” Nick Maxwell bump has just been heard and the decision is that he is free to play in next weeks NAB Cup game.

Maxwell becomes the first player in AFL History to win an appeal under the new system…..Is this a sign of things to come? He becomes the first out of 11 players to go to the appeals board to win

Mr Terry Forrest QC, Maxwell and Collingwood’s advocate will be “The Man” when it comes to appeals from now on….

Quite extraordinary.

Will keep you all posted with any new developments.

Collingwood and that Nick Maxwell Bump

Well, personally I think that the 4 weeks handed down to new Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell was a bit harsh others think not, I think Mark Robinson from the Herald Sun is one. Never the less 4 weeks is what he got and I just wonder if Patrick McGinnity had not received a broken jaw whether the penalty would have been a bit different?

Can Voss Cut The Mustard as Coach?

michael-voss

All eyes will be on the Brisbane Lions as they tackle the Saints and Michael Voss is sure to be under the spotlight. I heard a Brisbane fan on radio the other night saying that he think that Voss will not be able to “cut the mustard” as coach considering he was a former player and still has close relationships with the players that are still playing there.

I beg to differ, I think Michael Voss is well aware of what is needed to be a senior coach of an AFL Football side and I think has already tried to stamp his authority, considering his stance on the Rahn Hooper incident. Sole Captain Jonathon Brown has publicly stated just after Christmas that he thought that Voss was being hard on the players when he needed to be. That is good enough for me……

There is no doubt that every move, tactic and emotion will be scrutinized in his early stages of his coaching career and also if there is any correlation to the way Leigh Matthews went about it.

I Can’t Wait To See This One !!

barry_hall

Barry Hall to retire from AFL Football at seasons end and take up his career as a Boxer ! This I want to see. With Sydney not giving Big Bad Barry another contract this year is looking like it will be his last as an AFL Player. Peter Everitt is in no doubtas to whether Barry will be stepping into the ring at careers end.

This will be the talk all year I would imagine, especially if Hall’s form slumps at any stage throughout the year. There was talk of him fighting NRL Star Willie Mason a while ago maybe that event can eventuate after all. I certainly wouldn’t want to be playing against Barry if he is playing his last few games at the end of the year. What has he got to loose by belting you?

Will This Guy Ever Play AFL Football Again?

Mark_Coughlan

Is Mark Coughlan the unluckiest man in AFL Football at the moment or what? He just can’t take a trick can he!. Coughlan is set to have surgery tomorrow on his knee which he has had reconstructed. Although the Richmond FC is saying that it is not a huge deal, I tend to think any little injury that requires surgery to a guy that hasn’t played since Round 12 2006 is a bit bigger deal than any other player.

“Mark was just doing some light training and goal kicking this morning, just a little bit of twisting and turning, nothing unusual, and it turns out he’s slightly damaged his cartilage,”

If he did this doing the type of training that operations manager Ross Monaghan suggested (above quote) then what does the future hold. Coughlan may just end up as many other have done in the past and not reach his full potential. It is a shame because when he won the Richmond Best and Fairest in 2003 (seems like an eternity ago) he certainly looked the goods!

Let’s hope he gets back quickly from this latest setback and can slot into the Tigers Team in 2009.

Setanta O’hAilpin Smashed Cameron Cloke

Ha it had to happen didn’t it? Cameron Cloke getting smashed, I just didn’t think it would be a teammate that did it. AFL fans are probably well aware of what happened during the Carlton FC intra club practice match today (Friday). If not here is a quick run down. The big Irish man Setanta smashed Cameron Cloke with a punch to a head and then kicked him in the arse. I am surprised it took this long for it to happen.

We are not un accustomed to fiery practise games but this one takes the cake I reckon, I was just reading that the Umpires have lodged some paperwork to the AFL.

“A notice of investigation has been lodged by the umpires, so the match review panel will follow it up on Monday.”

Setanta may just find himself in some hot water. I really don’t agree with the AFL investigation, surely Chris Judd and Brendan Fevola can run the show and sort out some punishment.

What do you think? Should the AFL be involved in this one or should it be left to the Carlton Football Club.

Join AFL Football on Twitter

The other day I wrote about getting onboard The Twitter bandwagon and there seems to be quite a few of getting on. So what I have just done is set up what is called a HashTag, so that we can keep the AFL Football Talk to our group of AFL Football fans.

This Twitter thing is relatively new to me as well but from what I can gather to keep the Tweets between us AFL Football people and also follow the discussions. Here is what you do.

To follow the Discussion simply type in follow #aflfootball in whatever application you are using to access Twitter. You will then be following the “AFL Group”.

Update: If you are sending a General Tweet about AFL Football then include #aflfooty in the tweet.

OR

If you have a message to send or something to say to the group simply add #aflfootball !message to the Tweet and your message will only be sent to people following the group.

EG: #aflfootball !Who will win the 2009 Premiership

That message will only be seen by people following the #aflfootball group.

Check this article for the #hashtag commands.

Let’s start building an AFL Twitter Army…….
