Memo AFL Clubs: This is How To Beat Geelong

Mick Malthouse was merticulous in his planning and the players carried his plans out to the tee!! It was just about the perfect game for the Collingwood Football Club last night and showed the AFL Football public just how to beat the Geelong Football Club.
The contact tackling, pressure and harassing is something that Geelong has not been subjected to in about 28 games of AFL Football. There were times that on the TV that we saw just how discipline the Pies were in running with their direct opponent during the course of play and that caused Geelong to have time and space and was the reason the Pies won the game and won it so convinsingly.

Alan Didak was outstanding for the Pies and he has added to his game the ability to gain a lot of possessions as well as show his stuff in from of goal. Travis Cloke was grabbing everything in the air and was helped by the game of Anthony Rocca. Rocca, while not collecting a lot of the footy played more of a decoy role and lead Matthew Scarlett up the ground and got him out of the way and he kept doing this all game and allowed Cloke a bit more freedom. Dane Swan again racked them up and was fantastic. Dale Thomas started like a house on fire and continued through out the game and capped the game off with a “Daicos” style goal in the last quarter. Wellingham showed that he is going to be a player to watch and was great against his direct opponent Gary Ablett.

The Cats had a bad night and their stars just couldn’t get into the game and were kept under wraps by some discipline Collingwood players. Everyone will be saying that it is a loss that Geelong had to have but now the other clubs may realize that Geelong are human like everyone else and are quite beatable by playing a discipline one on one style of game that negates their time and space that they have been allowed to have over the last 18 months.

Good for Football.

Was great to watch in deed. I would be a bit worried in the Geelong camp as they played this bad against Freo and Richmond as well but due to them unable to win a game, they managed to mask their poor form. Collingwood are that little bit better.

Even my wife who does not know much realised that Geelong have been playing like rubbish and knew how to beat them :D

i think the way collingwood played is the way to beat any side. Hard to maintain that play for 22 weeks though. Lets not get to carried away geelong have lost 2 of their last 29 games… i think they are going ok but will be greatly boosted by the return of Ottens this week and hopefully chapman will return and rooke who was omitted should come back in for his hardness and pressure.

No Egan was highlighted by the monsters cloke and rocca which does leave some concern v hawthorn with franklin and roughead

It’s funny what can happen over a month of footy. Yes i agree Geelong were beaten by a very disciplined Collingwood team back in May. However Geelong were going through the motions for the first half of the year and i certainly would not rated the win as “the way to beat them”.
Geelong has since stepped up towards their true form and i doubt if Collingwoods best would get close to Geelong if they were to play next week.
A week may be along time in Footy, but a month or two must seem like an eternity. Geelong are playing as good now as the were when they won the flag last year.
Let’s see if any one gets close to them over the next month or so leading up to the finals.
Oh, and you may think that i support Geelong.
You would be wrong to presume so.
    Go TIGERS!!!
