AFL Football Round 6 – Anzac Weekend Review – Part 3

AFL Football Round 6 - HawthornIn a game that I thought The Hawks should win by 10 goals, the Tigers actually took it up to the Hawks and due to the terrible kicking of the Hawk forwards just failed to get over the line by 12 points. The Hawks kicked 14 goals and 22 behinds and glamor forward Lance Franklin was the worst offender kicking 1 goals 7 behinds. Alistair Clarkson said that they will just put that game in the bank take the 4 points and move on to next weeks blockbuster against the Collingwood Football Club. Matthew Richardson was absolutely brilliant for the Tigers, he started on the wing as he has done in the past couple of games and then moved forwards and also played back where he filled in the space in front of the Buddy Love. He ended the game with 4 goals 27 disposals and 13 marks, he is truly playing some inspired football.

But it was the brilliance of the Hawthorn mid fielders especially Luke Hodge who was best for the Hawks in my book closely followed by Michael Osborne, Rick Ladson, Sam Mitchell and Shane Crawford. And what about Cyril Rioli’s goal! Gee he provides some spark that only the indigenous players can. He is simply great to watch.

Lance Franklin was down but such is the depth of the Hawthorn Forward line at the moment that Jarryd Rouhead stood up ant put through 5 goals.Terry Wallace is very pleased with the playing group at the moment, and why not they have played 2 of the inform teams in the comp in the last 2 weeks and have been very very good, are The Tigers beginning to turn the corner?

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the blokes playing in the senior side at the moment,”

They will be tested in the next 2 weeks when they come up against St Kilda and Geelong.

AFL Football Round 6 - Sydney SwansHere we go again, another week that is sure to spark more debates on whether the game of AFL Football should be decided by a Shoot Out, Golden Goals, Extra Time or whatever else anyone can come up with after another drawn game at the Telstra Dome this time between North Melbourne and Sydney. Dean Laidley described the game as “trench warfare” and Adam Goodes finally found form as good players do in big games to be best on ground. It has been a difficult couple of weeks for Goodes and has had a lot of critisism thrown at him in the past few weeks but showed in this game what a star footballer he really is.

Michael Firritto was the hero for the North Melbourne side when he was at full stretch when he managed to get a finger on a snap at goal from Captain Kirk in the last minute of the game. It was far from a pretty game of football but as tends to happen when games are close like this one is that you just can’t turn it off. I am glad I didn’t. Firitto was great in defence as was Drew Petrie and skipper Adam Simpson was the workhorse of the side, his work ethic during games of football is outstanding. As mentioned Goodes was the best and Michael O’Loughlin found some form as well booting 3 goals while Brett Kirk and Kieran Jack worked extremely hard all day and Irish man Tadgh Kennelly gave plenty of run for the Swans.

Tagging and Drawn games will be the talking points after Round 6 of AFL Football you would think, oh yeah and Daniel Kerr’s head butt.

Think it’s too early to say we’ve turned the corner when you consider that if Buddy had put the right set of boots on, we’d be more likely talking about a 10 goal thrashing rather than about how close we got. But there are some encouraging signs for the Tiges, and it’s great to see the team get through another quality side without a humiliating defeat. Says something about the boys actually showing some pride in the jumper, I’m hoping at least.
