Wayne Carey Speaks Out On ABC TV Show Enough Rope
Wayne Carey has broken his silence and appeared on the ABC television show Enough Rope hosted by Andrew Denton. There are going to be varying opinions to this
interview and I didn’t really know how to take him. Was he serious? Was he told what to say? Is this a PR exercise to get people to feel sorry for him? There is no doubt that Wayne Carey is a troubled individual but I came away from this interview thinking that he is in denial as to what has transpired over the past few months. He sat there and categorically denied just about everything that has been reported in the media. There has to be some tiny piece of truth to at least one the “incidents” that took place. I really think that this interview was a bad idea for him to do because I don’t think he came out looking any better.
It was a broad ranging interview and Andrew Denton is a master at this sort of thing and he did ask the tough questions. When grilled over the Kelly Stevens affair they showed snippets of the press conference when Carey announced he was quitting the Kangaroos and Carey could not look at the vision and clearly has not overcome that. You could feel how uncomfortable Wayne Carey was through out the interview by the emotions on his face it was oozing out of the TV and into the living rooms of millions of viewers.

In response to the interview on Footy Classified former teammate Glenn Archer said that the biggest shock was the drug taking.
“That is the biggest shock since he left North Melbourne that he went down the drug path, because he was not into drugs at all in his time at North.”
He is obviously trying to get the treatment he needs for his problems but it seemed to me that he was just sitting there giving clinical responses. He admitted full responsibility and all that but he just did not seem all that convincing.
As a football fan, and Wayne Carey (as a footballer) fan it was hard to watch. It was sad to see a player that I idolized as a child growing up in the situation he is in now. Having to move from house to house to avoid being harassed and to embarrassed to go to the shop to get food. I guess you could say that he has brought all of this on himself and you could not argue with that, let’s hope he can get his life back on track, for his daughters sake at least.

Well, as an alcoholic, adulterer and drug user for a start Wayne’s never going to be the most credible chap at the best of times.
But considering the pressure he was under for the interview (very sensitive topic that he’s probably not used to talking openly about yet, national television, legal issues etc), you have expect clinical answers to a degree and I thought it was a brave move.
