AFL Pre Season Updates 1st Feb 2007
Well it is that time in the pre season when things are starting to heat up and we will start seeing some games of footy, albeit the NAB Cup. I thought I would compile a list of what has been happening around the Clubs and the AFL in recent weeks that many of might not have caught up with. All the talk at the moment is on the South Africa Region and how that could be the next big recruiting ground for AFL Clubs. And if you haven’t read the interview I did with Brett Northey from World Footy News then read it here to get an insight into Australian Rules Football Around The World.
Other Pre Season News
- At Geelong Matthew Egan and Matthew Scarlett look set to miss the NAB Cup opening match. Scarlett had an arthriscope on his knee on Thursday to remove “loose bodies” and Egan has hit a hurdle in his recovery from his broken foot which will see him have surgery next week to remove a screw from his foot that was causing irritations.
- There is already talk of Nick Reiwoldt heading to the Gold Coast to play for the 17th team. But he has hit that on the head for now saying “All my energy and focus is on winning a premiership with St Kilda”
- Still on the Gold Coast and the AFL has pushed back the 2010 date for a 17th team now saying it would be 2011. The stadium deal holding things up. How many times will it be pushed back?
- Peter Bell will play on for Fremantle in 2008 but he will be residing in Geralton 400km away, meaning the 32 year old will be flying in and out of Perth. That will be tough.
- Stewart Dew shredding the kilos and may play in the NAB Cup for the Hawks
- Down the Geelong Highway and Mark Blake is still filthy at missing the Grand Final, and rightly so. But apparentley he his tearing up the track down there at Skilled Stadium.
- The Hawks, Lions and Demons players to get off the grog during the month of February to support FebFast, that will be interesting to see!
- Sean Rusling enjoying his best pre season at the Pies at looks in great shape to take a leading role in the Magpie forward half in 08
- Paddy Ryder looking bigger and better down at Bomber Land
- The Demons Players are sitting hour long exams to learn Dean Bailey’s new game plan. Interesting to see how many pass and what happens to the players that fail.
- Warren Tredrea looking dangerously fit over at Port.
- “Axel” Foley hungry to back up his breakthrough season in 2007. He was recently named a Vice Captain for the Tigers
- North Melbourne add Michael Firrito and Daniel Pratt to their Leadership Goup.
And that wraps up the updates for today. It has been a very long pre season so far and everyone is certainly keen for the season to start.

Nice blog!
As a Hawks fan, do you think Dew’ll actually shed enough weight to make an impact on the seniors? And if so, will it be more than just a few minutes impact… can he really get his physical condition to a level where he’ll be a player who contributes?
Cheers,
Don
