AFL Football Round 2 - Essendon vs Geelong
No one will give the Bombers a chance. It is the toughest gig in AFL Football at the moment, trying to beat the reining premier Geelong. Well that is the task facing the young and enthusiastic Bomber team on Sunday at the Telstra Dome. Matthew Knights has said that his team will back themselves in to win and that is the way they need to play. With Scott Lucas going down last week and going to miss a fair chunk of the year the Bombers will need to find other forward options. Matthew Lloyd now will have all the attention on him which means there needs to be other avenues. David Hille and Jason Laycock now become more important when they are resting down in the goal square and need to stand up as forwards and kick some goals, as do the mid fielders. Courtney Johns may get his chance this week to prove he is capable of filling the shoes of Lucas, and Adam McPhee now needs to really step up too. The on ball brigade of the Bombers are going to have to play 2 way footy and will not get it all their own way that is for sure.
It shapes to be an intriguing contest as the Bombers will continue to play their free wheeling run at all cost game and the Geelong team are masters at putting pressure on their opponents. It is a huge test to see where the Bombers are at. Geelong on the other hand will want to stamp their authority as the heavy weights of the comp. You can bet that they will come out and try an assert their authority. Tom Harley and Matthew Scarlett will lead the Cats defensive unit. And the battle between Gary Ablett and Mark McVeigh will be a cracker. As will the match up that might occur between Paul Chapman and Rising Star Nominee Bachar Houli. The Cats are great at running the footy and their skills are superb, they had a good tough win last week and Mark Thompson said it was just what the doctor ordered. The Cats midfield was in fine form last week and Chapman, Ablett, Bartel, Ling, Kelly (the list just goes on) will all need to be watched closely and is where the game will be won or lost.
Being a Bomber fan I hope they put in a great performance and don’t go into their shells. If they can some how curb the dominance of the Cat midfield they may just be able to cause an upset. Geelong by 12 points.
