AFL Football Round 2 - Swans Attacking and North Melbourne Bounce Back
A lot was spoken about the Swans game plan last week, slow, boring and ugly. Well the Swans were anything but that on the weekend as they opened up and drilled through 22 goals in
their 68 point drubbing of the Port Adelaide side. Barry Hall had a joke after the game with this comment “We’re just all-round boring, I think,”. Hall was in great touch for the Swanies booting 5 goals. But is wasn’t just the performance of the Senior players that was a standout, the Swan youngsters in Jarred Moore, Craig Bird, Ed Barlow, Heath Grundy and Kieren Jack all backed up their impressive starts last week with another good game.
It was a dismal day for the Port Adelaide side and not many of their players could get into the game. Shaun Burgoyne played a lone hand up forward and ended the game with 4 goals. Kane Cornes was OK and worked his backside of as usual but his brother in arms Chad had no impact on the game whatsoever. The loss now puts the Power at 0-2 and their form would be somewhat of a concern to coach Mark Williams who does not take mediocracy all that well. The Power have another tough task this week against home town rivals Adelaide who are in some good form. While the Swan will take on the Brisbane Lions.
North Melbourne Account for the Tigers
Corey Jones had a day out in this one booting 7 goals and led the Kangaroos to an easy 41 point win over a disappointing Tiger unit. Terry Wallace has warned
his players they will be dropped if they do not respect the guernsey. It will be an interesting selection meeting this week. The Tigers seem to only know one way to goal and that is through Matthew Richardson and the Kangaroo defenders knew this and were able to pick the Tiger attacks off with ease. I was listening to Grant Thomas on SEN after the game and he was saying the the Tigers are too predictable and there is certainly a pecking order when they deliver into the forward line. If it is not Rico then it will be Nathan Brown so the defenders know who to cover before the ball even makes it into the forward line.
A good sign for the Tigers though was that they did not give up and were only outscored by 1 point in the last quarter, whereas last year they would have been beaten by 100 points. The little “Energizer Bunny” Jake King would want to forget this game as he was on Jones and Shannon Grant (4 goals) for most of their goals but at least he kept battling away. Chris Newman was good all day and Troy Simmonds was good in the Ruck. It is not all doom and gloom for the Tigers they just need to work on their game plan a bit I reckon and find some more goal kickers. Anyway they take on the Pies this week and that will be a tough one, while the North Melbourne side will take on the rampaging Hawthorn Football Club.
