Ben Cousins, Ben Cousins, Ben Cousins
Not much to talk about at the moment bar Ben Cousins. As an Essendon supporter I would love to have Cousins at Bomber Land but apparently the Bomber leaders are not of the same view.
“He is off our radar, not because of his illness, we just wouldn’t recruit a 30-year-old,” Horsburgh said.
Dissapointing! It astounds me that more clubs are not going put their hats in the ring, although some maybe playing their cards closer to their chests than other’s. I would have thought he would be a great fit for the Bombers and other clubs for that matter. I have no doubt he would be in the best 2-3 if not the best midfielder in whichever team that ends up aquiring his services.
Other clubs may just show their cards after the AFL alow him to nominate for the draft.

The internal “fabric” of a list is an important factor in club success. The Bombers’ ‘disposal” of Hardwicke, Blumfield, Caracella and Heffernan in the early noughties hastened their slide down the ladder, in my opinion. Beyond plain playing skills, clubs need to be careful about how imported experience fits into the team’s dynamic.
That’s not to say there haven’t been many successful examples of experienced players melding into teams successfully. I think we should be wary of reading clubs’ pronouncements on Cousins too literally. There are a lot of other issues involved, especially in this case.
As an Essendon member, I’m not upset at Horsburgh’s comment. I think the risks, for a young list, outweigh the uncertain gains.
he is a great player and should play for the power!!!!!!!!
he is a great player and should play for the power!!!!!!!! he is clean and should play what ever dometeria says
Hey,
Like your site- love the layout and the content.
On Ben Cousins, it shattered me that my beloved Saints didn’t pick him up. Thought he had so much to offer- hopefully he still finds a way to an AFL club.
If you check out my site and like it let me know… Myself and a few friends have only just started but we are trying, would love some feedback.
I heard that Kevin Sheedy berated Richmond football operations manager Craig Cameron about the Tigers’ reluctance to consider recruiting Cousins. this was on Nov. 26 at a Tigers function.
Just heard yesterday that Richmond are seeking to rookie-list Polak and there’s some speculation that they’re angling to pick up Ben Cousins.
The treatment of Ben Cousins by the AFL is in my view hypocritical. A way should be found for him to re-enter the game. Aussie Rules has lost its way as a traditional game in which a “fair go” applies as a fundamental ehtic. I am going elsewhere for my sporting satisfaction…. and I was going to become a Bomber’s member and invest in supporting the game. Not now
Well rest easy, He is officially on a list with Richmond picking him up even though the AFL did the best they could to reject him a chance in 09.
I’m an Essendon supporter too and I’m disappointed that the Bombers didn’t try to get Cousins. It seems that Kevin Sheedy played a role in getting Richmond to grab Cousins and if Sheeds was still at Essendon, he may well have got Cousins for the Bombers line up.
Ben’s first game for the Tigers this week, even if it is an NAB Cup match. Go Ben! Go Tigers!
