Wayne “Duck” Carey, is he the real deal?

CareyvsMasonThe eagerly anticipated battle of the codes between Willie Mason and Barry Hall might be a fizzer with the Swans putting a dampener on preceedings, but Wayne Carey has now put his hand up to take on the big man from the Sydney Roosters. I guess the $1 million price tag may be to much to pass up.

I have read and heard on numerous occations that Carey can handle himself in the ring, with the Shinboner of the Century Glenn Archer saying that he wouldn’t want to fight the “Duck” and he is the best fighter he has seen. I can’t remember if that was before or after the fiasco with Anthony Stevens? (see the footage below and you be the judge). Carey has the lingo down pat, he said that he would fight Mason “any where, any time”.

I just think Mason just wants to belt the crap out of anyone in AFL circles ! First there was Big Bad Barry, the Swans turned that down, then he moved onto Brendan Fevola, Carlton turned that down, now Carey.

The only motive Carey would have surely would be the $1 million, he can’t really be a chance could he? Mason is 9 years younger and still playing professional football, although Carey says he has kept in good shape. It has created some good conversation on the AFL Football Forums with opinions evenly spread should the fight ever eventuate.

They say pictures tell a thousand words, going on the picture above Mason wins in 2.

I have got to say the idea of Mason fighting Carey would be sweet. Whether or not this happens, which would surprise me if it did, it’s a promoters dream. Carey as seen in the above video doesn’t seem to be too nimble though(mind you he can let go on some ripper hip and shoulders and he was under a lot of pressure at that time), and considering Carey’s age etc, I would think he would get beaten quite convincingly by Mason. However…as a player Carey was a very tough old school type in his day, and you never know what might happen in the ring if he had the fitness and $1 million dangled in front of him like a proverbial carrot?

Paul I think his personal ego may be getting the better of him in this instance. But as you said you just never know.
