St Kilda 2008 NAB Cup Champions
After a summer that saw some high profile people of the AFL knock the crap out of the NAB Cup as a competition, the last 3 weeks have seen
some excellent footy being played and it paints the picture for an interest 2008 AFL Season. Last night was no exception. Adelaide were favourties and being at AAMI Stadium most peopl thought they would come away with the win. No one told the youngsters of the St Kilda Football Club that and they were simply awesome. AFL NAB Cup 2008 Grand Final Preview
Well after what seems to be a long time coming the NAB Cup Grand Final is actually here. The NAB Cup has been battered from pillar to post over the last 4 weeks, but for the 2 teams competing this week, Adelaide Crows and St Kilda it is game on as both teams go head to head for the title of NAB Cup Winners, or as Aker would say “Mickey Mouse Winners”.
Both teams have been in good form during the opening rounds of the 2008 NAB Cup with Adelaide probably
being the standouts for me. Neil Craig has given the players a new lease on life with a new and exciting game style which now shy’s away from the defensive style we have seen over the years. The Crows are now running and carrying the footy and with the likes of James Porplyzia and Scott Thompson killing em in the midfield there are great signs ahead for the Crows. The Saints on the other hand, while still winning have probably been a bit scratchy from their lofty standards and haven’t had their best team on the park yet and still won’t this week. It is pretty ominous for other sides that the Saints are still winning while there is a lot of improvement to come. Read more
What Everybody Ought to Know About The Saints in 08
![]()
The Saints, who finished ninth last year and well below the lofty expectations of many football observers, will be hoping to launch themselves up the AFL ladder in 2008.
Let’s take a look at the incoming and outgoing players for 2008.

Exchange period – received: Sean Dempster (Sydney), Charlie Gardiner (Geelong), Steven King (Geelong), Adam Schneider
(Sydney)

DELETIONS:

Delisted: Barry Brooks, Andrew McQualter, Phil Raymond, Justin Sweeney, Fergus Watts, James Wall (rookie)
New found ruck strength.
An area that the Saints will be looking to improve on which has been an area that has caused them great concern for the last few years will be in the Ruck department. But heading into the 2008 season the Saints big men look to be in good shape. Michael Gardner is fit and raring to go, and they have drafted Geelong Premiership ruck man Steven King, who a lot of people regard as a bit of a dud pick up but I for one think that they have made a great decision. Then throw Justin Koschitzke, Michael Rix and Jason Blake into the mix and suddenly they have a plethora of big men to choose from. The Saints onballers with be salivating at the prospect.
A stat that I found quite alarming was the fact that the Saints were ranked last in points scored per game. Although Fraser
Gehrig was their leading goal kicker I am just not sure he is the answer and I can not believe they re drafted him. If he is to make a difference to the Saints he needs to be a more consistent goal scorer and not just kick a couple of bags of goals and end up winning the goal kicking. Maybe the Saints can rest him unless they are playing at the Telstra Dome. Read more
Fraser Gehrig Nominating for the AFL National Draft? What is he thinking !
Well, I have heard it all now ! this time ex St Kilda bigman Fraser “The Snake” Gehrig wants to make a return to AFL Football, and St Kilda are actually looking at re drafting him…
I am sure the other clubs are rubbing their hands together in the hope St Kilda will waste one of their draft picks on the G-Train.
There was a classic comment from Scott Clayton, the Western Bulldogs recruiting manager, when asked whether they would be interested:
“Count us out. We have a plan in place we are committed to”, I wonder if he was laughing when he said that? I am sure this will be the response of the other clubs as well.
He was said to have made a phone call from Sweden at 2am, had he had much to drink? My tip, he will end up with mate Justin Peckett at Karingal Football Club, a local club the Peckett coaches on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.
